5 Signs a Pastor Needs to Take a Sunday Off

In my experience, most pastors get a D- in the rest category. In a recent episode of “The Glass House” podcast, David and Caron Loveless touched on an issue that’s especially prevalent among church leaders: the “arrogance of capacity.”

The arrogance of capacity, as the Lovelesses define it, is “not paying attention to the actual limitations of what our souls and physical bodies can handle.” We plow on through the hard things without pausing to rest and recharge in Jesus. We ignore clues our bodies give us. And over time, it creates a level of exhaustion and stress that’s not sustainable.

According to Lifeway Research, 64% of pastors say they need to consistently take a sabbath, and 55% indicated they need to more effectively avoid overcommitment and overwork.
